Cemetery historian Jim Logan leads these popular evening lantern tours of the cemetery. After paying respects to Washington Irving, author of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," we visit a Revolutionary War general, the cemetery's Revolutionary War and Civil War monuments, a notorious counterfeiter, a soaring gothic monument of a wealthy merchant, industrialists Andrew Carnegie and William Rockefeller, and others. And we almost always step into a 100-year-old underground vault. Evening tours cover more than a mile on foot, so wear comfortable shoes.

Seeking Shadows: After Hours at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery

Saturday, August 7, 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm.

When the gates of Sleepy Hollow Cemetery close for the day our walk begins… and the shapes and shadows will beset our path. Hudson River photographer Joseph Squillante leads this photography Walkshop® through the Victorian-era section of Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. On this walk we will encounter a great many and varied qualities of natural light--from day into twilight and then dusk as night moves in all around. Shadows will abound and we will pay special attention to them as they extend over the land, offering greater dimension to your photographs. You will extend the reach of the “normal” exposure to brighten shadows and turn daylight into darkness. We will push the limits of your camera through over and under exposure, as well as working with the basics of aperture for depth of field and shutter for control of motion. In addition to landscape photography, we will create portraits of angelic statues, architectural studies of grand mausoleums, still lifes, close-up details, and perhaps steal a peek inside a crypt with a long exposure changing darkness into light. Let’s discover this magical place together. Please bring five of your favorite photographs to review and share with the group. A camera with manual controls is required and a tripod is recommended. Class limit: 10. Tuition: $60. Rain date: Saturday, August 14, 2010. View Joseph Squillante’s Hudson River work.
